How Often Business Signs Need Replacing

The average business sign has a limited lifespan, so waiting for it to fall off the wall is not the time to be replacing it.

Colour Has Visibly Faded

Most outdoor signs start to lose their colour after 5 – 8 years. Whether printed or cut lettering, the colours will fade due to direct sunlight. While cleaning a faded sign may make it look temporarily clean, the colours will not come back. In contrast, a new sign will have deep, rich colours.

The Face Is Cracking or Delaminating

Some flat-cut letters and printed panels can develop cracks and/or delamination at the edges as they get older. This type of sign is best replaced when it starts to look very worn and develops delamination as this can be very difficult to repair and looks very shabby.

Fixings or Frames Have Corroded

It is worth checking the fixings and frames of your signs on a yearly basis for surface rust. This can be treated in some cases but if the fixings are left to corrode severely or even for a short period of time, it can be unsafe to remove and reattach.

Your Branding Has Changed

An old logo on a sign can mislead customers as well as look bad for your business.

Legislation Has Been Updated

Illuminated signs and signs near listed buildings or in conservation areas can change status when new rules are brought into non compliant signs. Check with your local authority for the very latest advice regarding planning and safety.

A good sign is one of the cheapest forms of advertising there is for small businesses, so it makes sense to keep them looking their best.
