What to Bring to a Tapping Machine Demo

An example of what to take to a live demo so you can get the best out of it and see whether the machine can do your job.

Bring Your Own Workpieces

Be prepared to take some work pieces with you. Watch a demo of tapping on materials you use for your production. (Mild Steel, Aluminium, …) The demo will probably be done with test pieces, which will most probably not be the materials and the thread sizes you use for your production.

Note Your Thread Sizes Beforehand

Record the thread sizes and specifications that you use on a daily basis, whether standard or specialist. This could include things like left hand threads, large diameter threads or even metric threads with unusual pitch values. These are the sizes that you actually use on a daily basis, so bring them along to the demo. The supplier will be able to run a live test on a sample of the material that you work with, using the exact same tap sizes and thread specifications that you use.

Record Your Current Output

If you know the number of threads that you currently complete per hour then bring this with you to the demo. This will enable you to get a feel for the size of machine you require and how fast you will be able to complete work on the proposed machine in relation to your current output. Ask About Torque and Clutch Settings

Prepare a list of questions about Torque limits and Clutch sensitivity for Tapping. This is where the Tapping Machine is set to protect your Taps from breaking and the thread from stripping. You may also ask about the electric tapping machine and whether variable torque is possible for work with different materials.

Check the Cutting Oil Situation

Do find out if you should bring your normal cutting oil or if the supplier will bring some to use during the demo. The type of cutting oil used can affect the quality of the threads cut and it is important to be able to replicate the results that you see during the demo in your own workshop.

Measure Your Available Space First

Get a clear idea of the space available for the machine. Note the floor space and the available ceiling height, as well as your plans for mounting the tapping machine. If you are going through the capital equipment decision process for manufacturers you may also find this guidance on machinery procurement for manufacturers useful. Check the space before the demo to avoid disappointment.

Preparation means a demo is no longer just a sales show.
