When it’s time to update your heating system, it pays to know a little about the main types of central heating so you can decide what’s best for you. Here are the three main types of central heating:

  1. Conventional

This is a common type of heating system that works on the principles of gravity to function. A water tank is located high up, normally a loft space and this is where water is stored to be heated up. The water then runs through the pipes downwards thanks to gravity as opposed to any mechanical means. They are not installed as much in newer homes because they waste quite a lot of energy to heat and it’s difficult to elevate the water pressure. 1. Pressurised

This type of system can heat water directly in a cylinder which can be located anywhere in the property. They are expensive and require regular maintenance but are chosen by businesses who rely on lots of hot water because they are highly efficient. The system requires a high pressure but the benefit of this is that multiple appliances can run at the same time without a drop in pressure anywhere.

  1. Combi Boiler

These systems enjoy the benefits of being highly efficient and retaining good water pressure. They are perfect for not wasting energy on heating water that’s not required. A combi boiler does not require a cold water tank in the loft and so are ideal for smaller properties. The combi boiler is now viewed as the standard for newer properties.
