The kitchen is a great place for saving energy. Here are some tips to get you started:
1. Don’t automatically switch on the oven
Ovens can be expensive to run, especially if you aren’t filling them fully. Look at alternatives to cook your food in a more cost-effective way.
One example could be to use a slow cooker or an air-fryer. If you are going to use an oven, consider batch cooking to fill it up, and then freeze individual portions in Tupperware to last you through the week.
2. Be creative with leftovers
Don’t get into the habit of throwing leftovers away when you can use them in so many creative ways. Google ideas and you’ll find plenty, from salads to soups. Casseroles, soups and curries are a great way to use up veg that is past its best too
3. Take appliances off standby
It’s very easy to get into the habit of leaving things on standby, but it costs money. So when you have a kitchen refurb, factor these types of energy-saving measures into your project. A good kitchen refurb can also help to make your kitchen more energy efficient by adding smart choices into its appliance mix, layout and design.
4. Invest in energy-efficient appliances
When the time comes to get new appliances, invest in energy-efficient models. For example, heat pump tumble dryers can be rated as impressively as A-rated nowadays, compared to old-fashioned models.
Look at alternatives too. For example, do you even need to run the tumble dryer regularly or could you simply hang out your laundry on the line, or start it outdoors for a 50% dry before finishing it in the tumble dryer? Be creative!
5. Use energy-efficient lights
Lightbulbs tend to be used heavily in the kitchen so, again, use energy-efficient bulbs that aren’t burning through carbon and your earnings! Remember to turn them off entirely when you aren’t in the room as it’s very easy to get into the habit of leaving lights on constantly.
