When seeking renovations or repairs to a home, the roof is often ignored in favour of the homelier interior. But roofs are the one thing keeping your homes safe from the elements, and shouldn’t be overlooked. We’ve amassed and assessed the most common roofing materials in this article to help you decide what’s best for you.

Slate

The best-known and most durable choice for roofing, slate tiles have been providing shelter from the elements for centuries – for good reason. Slate roofs are so tenacious, it’s likely they’ll stick around longer than you, with the average slate roof lasting 75-100 years.

These benefits come at a cost, with their weight leading to an expensive installation process. And despite their lifespan, individual tiles are more likely to be chipped away and dislodged over time. Regular roof cleaning Stroud will help identify these problems early. You can find a range of services for roof cleaning in Stroud online.

Metal Panels

Typically cheaper, but less durable, metal panels provide excellent support and protection. This option is sturdier in the sense that metal won’t dislodge as slate tiles would, but the lifespan is typically only around 30-50 years.

Metal is lighter and easier to install, and therefore cheaper per square foot than slate. It’s also more energy efficient and helps to lower your monthly bills. However, although you can have metal that imitates slate aesthetically, the metal remains much louder in rain or hailstorms.

Composite Shingles

This option is a fairly recent invention, building the most durable roof from a composite of wood, slate, laminate, and polymer. However, their overall lifespan still doesn’t match that of slate.

Like metal, composite shingle roofs also last around 50 years, are typically cheaper (thanks to their more common materials), and can imitate the look of slate roofs.

Asphalt Shingles

Asphalt shingles are an even cheaper option, with the material being even more cost-effective, though this category’s lifespan is the lowest, averaging 25 years. Depending on your choice of service, the lifespan can be extended, but 25 years is still a very long time.
