What is Parkinson’s Disease
Parkinsons disease is a neurological condition that is progressive. This means that the symptoms will develop and increase in severity over time.
There are essentially three main symptoms that can appear with Parkinson’s Disease and these are slow movement. Stiff muscles and tremors or involuntary shaking. In some cases, these symptoms may lead to the individual needing to use Mobility Aids like the ones from Ability Superstore to help with everyday tasks.
As well as these common symptoms there are other issues that may occur, although not everyone will experience these.
- Problems with memory recall
- Anxiety and depression
- Insomnia and other sleep problems
- Problems with balance and control
- Anosmia – a loss of the sense of smell
Whilst there is no cure for Parkinson’s, more and more research is being undertaken, in part thanks to high profile celebrities such as Michael J Fox and Billy Connolly who both live with the disease. As a result of this new treatments are being found and these include medications as well as occupational and physical therapies.
With around 1 in 500 globally being affected by the disease it is important that further research is undertaken to understand the causes of Parkinson’s as well as ways in which the symptoms can be managed and ultimately the goal is to prevent the condition from progressing to where it causes large issues for the individual and their quality of life.
