Lightning is one of those stunning atmospheric events that most of us have learned about and fear. Lightning usually occurs when clouds are thunderous or humid, although there are occasions when lightning does not occur. The lightning flash is a pulse of electricity that has about two milliseconds in duration. Lightning storms occur when heat is on the rise and the atmosphere is unstable and is often accompanied by hail, high winds, and sometimes tornadoes.

Lightning occurs during thunderstorms. A thunderstorm is a mixture of air and moisture. Thunderstorms often appear in the form of rain clouds, cumulus clouds, stratus clouds, and stratus drizzle. A thunderstorm can last anywhere from a few minutes to hours, but on rare occasions, lightning can strike within several minutes of the thunderstorm. Lightning is often associated with thunder, but is not actually caused by thunder. Thunder is caused by lightning. The fast-moving expansion of hot air that the lightning produces is what causes the thunder clap sound.

Lightning storms occur when the upper levels of warm, moist air moves under relatively cool and damp clouds. The hot air rises and condenses into droplets while the cooler lower layers sink, creating an updraft, which in turn creates clouds.
